Tips to Help with Teething

Teething

Teething is a milestone every little one must pass. Yet for both babies and parents it can feel like a rollercoaster of sore gums, sleepless nights and shopping for every teething ring under the sun. At Armadillos Nursery we’ve seen it all. Here are some friendly, practical tips to help you and your baby through this sometimes trying time.

Understanding Why Teething Feels Tough

Teeth pushing through delicate gum tissue can be uncomfortable. Babies may drool more, chew on fingers and wake during the night. It can also affect their appetite and mood. Remember this phase is temporary. With a few soothing strategies in place you’ll soon see your little one’s first pearly whites emerge.

Spotting the Signs of Teething

Every baby is different, but common signs include:

  • Increased drooling and chewing
  • Irritability or clinginess
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • A slight rise in temperature (but not a high fever)
  • A change in feeding or sleeping patterns

If you notice any worrying symptoms such as a rash, high fever or diarrhoea, seek advice from your GP as these are not usually linked to teething itself.

Gentle Gum Massage

One of the simplest remedies is a little gum massage. Wash your hands thoroughly then use a clean finger to gently rub your baby’s gums in circular motions. The pressure helps ease discomfort and can distract them from fussiness.

Chilled Teething Toys

Cold is wonderfully soothing for sore gums. Pop a teething ring or soft washcloth in the fridge (not the freezer) for around 10–15 minutes. The cool surface helps to numb the pain. Always supervise your baby with any teething toy to ensure safety.

Offer Safe Chewing Options

Babies love to chew and it helps those new teeth break through. Offer chilled pieces of peeled cucumber or carrot in a mesh feeder. This lets them gnaw without the risk of large chunks breaking off. You could also try a rubber teething biscuit designed for little ones to hold and munch.

Keep Them Comfortable at Night

Teething pain can interrupt sleep. A soothing bedtime routine goes a long way. A warm bath followed by a gentle baby massage can calm your little one. Consider elevating the head of their cot slightly to help with any dripping saliva. And keep a lightweight muslin cloth nearby to wipe away drool.

Natural Teething Remedies

Some parents find gentle herbal teas or homeopathic remedies helpful. Chamomile tea, cooled and offered in small amounts, can have a calming effect. Always check with your pharmacist or health visitor before trying any herbal solution to ensure it is safe for your baby.

When to Seek Professional Advice

If teething symptoms seem severe or your baby appears unwell beyond the usual signs, consult your health visitor or GP. They can rule out other causes and advise on appropriate pain relief. Over‑the‑counter baby paracetamol or ibuprofen may be recommended for short‑term relief, but always follow dosage guidelines.

Final Thoughts

Teething can test even the most patient parent, but it won’t last forever. By offering gentle gum massages, chilled toys and a calm bedtime routine you’ll help your baby feel more comfortable as those first teeth emerge. And remember to celebrate those little smiles when each new tooth pops through.
